BULB SALE AND PLANT SPONSORSHIP TO SUPPORT SPY’S SACRED GROUNDS PROJECT

Saint Paul’s Youth (SPY), in partnership with adult parishioners from the property committee and beyond have been busy moving the Sacred Grounds(Sacred Grounds) project forward.  The group has conducted educational seminars, produced design documents and specifications, and located and marked the underground utilities.  We are now ready to move dirt and install plants!

The first phase of the plan comprises adding eight new trees to the campus along with a 125 square foot shrub border and a 250 square foot pollinator/wildflower garden.  The gardens will be located on Chestnut Hill Avenue while the trees will be planted roughly along the property line between the campus and the rectory.

We have the seed money (pun intended) to layout and prepare the beds and supply materials for maintenance.  Now we need to fund the plants themselves.  Beginning on Welcome Back Sunday on September 7, SPY and Sacred Grounds will offer bulbs for sale.  A variety of tulips, narcissus, and other spring bulbs will be available for order through Sunday 05 October.  The bulbs will be available for pick-up from St. Paul’s on Sunday October 26 – in perfect time for planting.

Don’t need bulbs, but can’t resist buying plants?  You may want to be a benefactor and adopt one or more of the plants scheduled for installation.  There are over twenty varieties of trees, flowers, and shrubs – all natives – available for sponsorship.  Click this link to see the full list.

What happens next?  SPY, with some adult supervision, will lay out the beds in early September.  Then our landscaper will prepare the beds prior to an intergenerational planting day on 27 September.  We are looking forward to a dedication on the Feast of St. Francis on Sunday 05 October.

This project is a unique opportunity for parish-wide participation.  SPY members are learning hands-on construction and landscaping skills while also developing an understanding of our responsibility to care for God’s creation.  Thank you for your support and participation.
